Growing mushrooms out of a cardboard box? The thought had never even entered her mind. Victoria Tabio, content strategist working with Logro Farms on spreading the message of sustainability, now held a simple box that promised to yield over 1.5 pounds of delicious, gourmet Oyster mushrooms.
We were interested in having someone document what the experience is like to own and try out one of our grow at home mushrooms kits. What better way than to give a kit to a complete newbie? Victoria agreed to give it her best shot and to report back in a few weeks. This is what happened.
Victoria here! When I first met Ryan and Jeremy from Logro Farms and learned exactly what it is they do, I was amazed. I couldn’t wait to tell their story. Ryan suggested it would be best if I experienced the magic of their grow at home mushroom kit myself, so of course I said yes! Here it is – a brand new kit I was entrusted with. Let’s get started!
I really didn’t want to screw this up – I wanted those shrooms! Luckily, the Logro guys have made the Oyster mushroom kit as dummy-proof as possible. I punched out a perforated hole on the front, sliced the plastic and got to misting it with a spray bottle. Week one saw the substrate inside turn a yellowish color. I guess something was happening. The waiting game was on.
It’s hard to see in the pic, but towards the end of week 2 I started to see some action. There were these little clusters of bumps rising out of the soil. I’m told they are called pins and that they are the heads of the mushrooms that will soon turn quite large. Woo, excitement!
Over the Weekend
So on Friday of the second week the pins were still forming. Maybe another week more? I had no idea what I was in for. On Monday I was met with what was tantamount to Godzilla rising out of what was once a placid sea. MUSHROOMS. How? So fast! Literally overnight they went from small pins to a full flush of delicious smelling shrooms. This was too amazing for words!
Ready for Harvest
Here they are the next day, nearly twice the size in 24 hrs. I had no idea mushrooms matured so quickly. I’ve been told that when the edges start to discolor they must be picked. I sliced off nearly half a pound that very evening.
Oh the things I’ll eat…
What to do with all these Oyster mushrooms? I’m no chef, but luckily I have a friend who is. He said he’ll come up with a dish that I won’t soon forget. Either way, this is definitely an experience that I think everyone should have. Growing mushrooms is so easy, educational, and delicious!
