By now you’re probably thinking we’ve exhausted our knowledge bank about our grow at home mushroom kit. Not. Even. Close. Today, let’s take our focus off the place we call home – planet Earth – and reach for the stars. Perhaps no organism will be more important as we branch out into the solar system than fungi. In fact, we’ll see that mushrooms seem so suspiciously adapted to excel in the harshness of space – that some fringe scientists have wondered if fungi are an alien species.
Can mushrooms help us conquer space?
From the Scientific American –
“In a paper published online in PLoS One, Casadevall and his colleagues report that ionizing radiation changes the electron structure of the melanin molecule and that fungi with a natural melanin shell (the soil-dwelling Cladosporium sphaerospermum and yeastlike Wangiella dermatitidis varieties), which were deprived of other nutrients, grew better in the presence of radiation.”
This discovery has far reaching implications for space travel. One of the biggest hurdles manned explorations have to overcome is how to effectively grow food during travel and (hopefully) after arrival. In space, astronauts will be without the benefit of Earth’s radiation blocking atmosphere, meaning that they will be subjected to much higher levels. While this scenario is not so good for humans themselves, it has positive implications for centering food production around types of fungi that excel in radioactive environments. After all, a food source that needs no light, grows rapidly, and offers high levels of proteins, healthy fats and antioxidants while absorbing residual radiation is something that seems almost too good to be true.
The great news is – it isn’t, and the implications are huge, not only for space travel, but more importantly for seeding planets with a hardy, robust life-form that can be utilized for food, medicine, and fuel.
